Chapter 45

James

The tire iron slipped and clattered to the ground. James banged his fist into the tire and muttered, “Of all the lousy luck.” Now he’d miss his meeting.

Loosening his tie and rolling up his sleeves, he pulled the flat off and rolled it onto the grass. He lifted the spare out and set it down as a car passed and several guys whistled out their windows. Looking up to see what they were worked up about, he saw a lone jogger in the distance. Shaking his head, he returned to his task, but then gasped and dropped the iron again.

As it clattered on the asphalt, his eyes zoomed back to the girl—taking in her tight spandex shorts, the green and black tankini accenting her gorgeous upper body, and her long, auburn hair pulled back behind her. His heart thumped as he stood and watched Suvi glide down the street.

As she approached, she glanced over and did a double take of her own.

Waving, he waited, wondering if she’d remember him and almost scared that she would. Her graceful body slowed and came to a stop as she slid ear buds out and snapped them to her shorts.

“James,” she cried.

Feeling like a schoolboy that she’d remembered his name, he grinned. “How have you been, Suvi?” She looked amazing. No bruising or caked blood on her face; no split, swollen lip; no mud in her hair. Sweat glistened on her perfect olive skin, making her look radiant.

She held up a finger. “Hold…on,” she panted.

Mesmerized, he stared as she grabbed a water bottle and threw back her head. Bubbles danced down the clear bottle as liquid entered her perfect lips and traveled down her slender neck. Heat rushed through him as his gaze strayed to her chest and bare midriff. When she finished drinking, she caught him staring and winked.

He hurried and looked away.

Taking a cleansing breath, she threw her arms out and stretched. “Sorry. You asked me how I was…and I’m good.” She took another deep breath. “What about you, my handsome knight? What’s it been—two months since I last saw you?” She glanced over at his flat tire and made a face. “Ooo, rotten luck.”

“Yeah,” he mumbled, humiliated at having been caught ogling her. “A nail.”

Her lips puckered as she drank him in unabashedly. “Wow! Every time I see you, you’re in a suit. Do you have a hot date or something?”

“Naw,” he answered, feeling his cheeks flame. “I was on my way to a church function.” He shifted his weight, not wanting her to leave.

She touched his arm. “Mind if I rest a minute and watch you work? I’m a little winded.”

He snapped to attention. “I’d like that.”

Suvi sat on the grass and crossed her long legs. Too tongue-tied to speak, he grabbed his tire iron and knelt to tighten lug nuts.

“Guess what? I met two of your missionary friends on campus a few weeks ago.”

“You did?”

“Yes. They were nice boys—white shirts and ties,” she nodded, “like yours, and very short hair.
